Imagine you run a private 5G network for a national railroad used by sensors to periodically report telemetry to a central server. Those devices are expected to only communicate on very predictable paths. Traditionally, you would have had to install a firewall in the network path to allow and deny specific flows.

Well you don't need a firewall anymore, you can now create Policy Rules in Ella Core and have your private 5G network enforce them. Each Policy Rules consists of:

  • Action: Allow or Deny
  • Description: Short description for readability
  • Protocol (optional): TCP, UDP, etc.
  • Remote Prefix (optional): CIDR (ex. 8.8.8.8/32)
  • Port (optional): Port range (Ex. 5001–5003)
Create Subscriber Policy Rules in Ella Core

Ella Core applies and enforces the rules instantaneously in its eBPF user plane program. Each incoming packet will now be compared against those rules and either forwarded or dropped. Both actions are logged for observability, troubleshooting and audit purposes and visible via the Traffic Flows page.

Ella Core reports Allowed and Dropped Flows

By removing the need for firewalls, Subscriber Policy Rules reduces the cost of enterprise Private 5G deployments and simplifies the life of those who operate it.
